SIAYA LANDSCAPE RESTORATION

In June 2022 , we launched the Siaya landscape restoration project at the foot hills of Got Abiero hill forest. The project is part of the ambitious Africa Forest Landscape Restoration Initiative (AFR100). It aims to restore and rehabilitate these ecosystems by implementing a series of measures that include reforestation, promoting sustainable land management practices, and raising awareness among local communities about the importance of ecosystem conservation. The specific objectives of the restoration include;

  • Improve the vegetation cover and diversity in the landscape.
  • Promote natural regeneration through the mitigation of the drivers of degradation.
  • Enhance the provision of ecosystem services such as water quality, carbon sequestration, soil quality enhancement, and the mitigation soil erosion.
  • Reduce poverty through the creation of jobs and nature based enterprises.
  • Improve the capacity of  the local communities to contribute  towards the restoration of the landscape.

ILEG intends to restore three ecosystems in the county by planting 100,000 tree seedlings, these include:  Got Abiero, River Nyandhiwa riparian area, and the Riparian lands adjacent to Lake Kanyaboli. The degradation of these landscapes is driven by climate change, illegal tree logging, conversion to other land uses, unsustainable agricultural practices, and invasive species.
