ILEG focuses on stimulating, encouraging, aiding and assisting local communities in improving their standards of living by promoting education, civic engagement, entrepreneurship and youth development, and Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
Overview
There is a close alignment between the outcomes envisaged in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the outcomes of almost all community development efforts whether they are focusing on issues of poverty, exclusion, inequality, lack of power or discrimination.
Community development is recognized as a critical element in Kenya’s development path. The social pillar of Vision 2030 for instance speaks to community development by seeking to create a ‘just, cohesive and equitable social development’.
Our Motivation
ILEG focuses on stimulating, encouraging, aiding and assisting local communities in improving their standards of living by promoting education; civic engagement; entrepreneurship and youth development; and information and communication (ICT).
The objective of the Community Development Programme is to enhance the standard of living of local communities in Kenya by promoting education, entrepreneurship, civic engagement and information and communication technology (ICT).
This is through:
- Supporting bright students from poor backgrounds to access quality education by being able to attend and stay in school.
- Promoting sustainable youth entrepreneurship through awareness raising, training and mentorship program.
- Strengthening the capacity of local communities to participate in development policy and decision-making and to engage with and monitor performance and demand accountability by government and other stakeholders.
- Strengthening the capacity of local communities in Kenya to access and utilize Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to support community development programs.
Our Approach
- NAIROBI SITE
Working in collaboration with CHALICE Canada to propagate their core values through charitable works to the bright needy students in society, in order to enable them get a good education, pursue their dreams and help alleviate their families and community from poverty.
- ILEG SIAYA COMMUNITY RESOURCE CENTRE (ISRC)
It is a central place where communities and community groups throughout Siaya can access information, training, advise and other resources relevant to socio-economic development and political governance.
Our Objectives
- Provide basic school requirements to bright and needy students in tertiary education
- Facilitate access to healthy meals to bright and needy students in universities by funding their meal cards to sustain them through the school semester.
- Work with beneficiaries in university level to mentor younger children into embracing good values and morals.
- Train community members and civil society on public participation and civic engagement.
- Support community members to participate in county and national planning and policy making, implementation and oversight processes
- Set up ILEG Siaya Community Resource Centre as a one-stop information, communication and civic engagement hub.
- Facilitate public access to updated public documents and information (both soft and hard copies) relevant to democratic governance and sustainable development.
- Train and mentor the youth on entrepreneurship skills
- Hold county-level meetings between youth entrepreneurs and innovators, private sector and the County Governments on support to youth entrepreneurship.
- Conduct outreach support and counseling, group work/peer support, and relationship counseling for the youth.
- Conducting forums to recognize and celebrate positive youth activities and providing assistance in gaining access to social, environmental, and economic resources.
- Offer volunteer positions, training and professional development opportunities for the youth
- Sensitize and train local communities and community groups on the use of the internet and other information and communication technologies (ICTs).
- Facilitate access and use of the internet and other information and communication technologies (ICTs) by local communities and community groups.
- Hold policy dialogues to advocate for broader access to ICTs by the poor and marginalized groups.
