World Water Day
World Water Day (WWD) is observed on March 22 every year, with the aim of inspring action towards Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030. The theme of WWD 2022 is Groundwater-making the invisible visible. It focuses on the hidden water resource, ground water that is often overlooked, underdiscussed and not fully recognised in sustainably development policy making.
Ground water may not be visible but its impact is highly visible,it contrbutes to the healthy functioning of the ecosystem, its also used for drinking, sanitation, food supply and quite often as backup water when lakes and rivers dry up.
Despte being a strategic resource, the management of groundwater often lacks sustainability. This is evidenced by falling water tables, drying wetlands, increased sea-water intrusion and deterioration of water quality.ILEG works with partners to promote sustainable management of groundwater resources in order to strengthen the resilience of rural and urban communities to climate change.
