Formulation of Kwale County Climate Change Framework Policy
The evidence and impacts of climate change in Kwale County are numerous and wide-ranging. Rising sea levels, fluctuating temperatures and shifting rainfall patterns pose serious challenges to environmental sustainability, economic development and human health and well-being. Effective policy design is a critical first-step in addressing these challenges. A stand-alone climate framework policy and legislation can raise ambition for mitigation and adaptation actions at the local level and support pursuit of internationally agreed sustainable development agenda.
Recognizing the urgency of a climate change framework policy and legislation at the sub national level, the County Government of Kwale established a Climate Change Unit (CCU) – a multi-sectoral team consisting of representatives from county and national government departments and agencies at the county level – to coordinate policy development process.Among other issues, the CCU focuses its work on two key areas: steering formulation of draft climate change framework policy and a bill.
