Environment, Democracy & Justice Past Projects
Most Kenyans, especially the majority poor rely almost exclusively on land and natural resources, such as forests, water, wildlife, fisheries, dry lands, wetlands and minerals – for sustenance. Apart from Agriculture which sustains over 80% of Kenyans, other livelihood activities like pastoralism, fishing, tourism and processing natural resources for sale are entirely dependent on natural resources
This project, implemented in partnership with the US-based Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide (ELAW) involves a series of seminars to support lawyers from Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania to sustain a dialogue and strategize on how best to use law to respond to myriad challenges facing local communities in the wake of a fast-emerging extractive industry, huge land deals and wanton destruction of natural resources in the region.
Activities:
Annual environmental law and litigation workshop and seminars in East Africa.
Supporting lawyers to attend ELAW international meetings.
Supporting lawyers to attend ELAW fellowship programmes
